1:25 scale model box for my 1888 theatre set design. The room is inspired by living conditions of the Lambeth working class in the late Victorian era. The room is an authentic replica of the type of room rented by the theatricals and poorer working class living in the slums of Kennington. This particular room is a replica of Methley Street in SE11.
The floor was stained with tea bags and later details were hand painted on, the fire place is also hand painted, as is the street scene of the Kennington park road window scape. This type of room is one of the smallest in the upper floor of the three story basement town houses typical of the area. I adore these houses and the area of Lambeth and the entire project was a real joy to work on.
I was inspired to use this particular street for it's connection to comedy legend Charlie Chaplin who lived at 39 Methley street with his mother and older brother as a child and my model is close to the conditions they and their neighbours would of faced in the Kennington slums at this time.
